Bel Air Homeowner Renovates with a Vengeance
Bel Air is a town in Harford County, which also serves as the county seat, with a total area of 3.03 square miles. It is located a few miles from I-95 along US Route 1.
The original name of Bel Air was Scott’s Old Fields, because it was part of the 416 acres of land earmarked for resurvey granted in 1731 to Daniel Scott. One tract was called “Scott’s Improvement” (23 acres) and another “Scott’s Friendship” (393 acres). These tracts were passed down to the family, and it was Aquila Scott who marked out the territory of the town of Bel Air on the southeast portion of the area around 1780 and two years later, the town of “Belle Aire” became the county seat. It was incorporated in 1874, and officially became the Town of “Bel Air” in 1798.
By 1865, there were 200 residents, and after the Civil War, the introduction of the Maryland and Pennsylvania Railroad (Ma & Pa Railroad), the canning industry, and various business enterprises accelerated the growth of the town to become the hub of commerce and government in the county. Cape Cod home needs fabulous granite counters
The client had recently acquired a Fannie Mae property in Bel Air at very low interest rates. He had bought it with the intention of renovating it for his retirement, just two years away. The Cape Cod home had four bedrooms and two bathrooms, perfect for when his son and his family comes to visit. He was three months into a major renovation, and was at the last stages of an impressive transformation, judging from the before pictures. He needed us to quote him for granite countertops for two vanities and his gourmet kitchen. We scheduled an ocular visit to measure the counters and consult on the best granite for the new designs.
Consultation
The client had gone with the quintessential modern Cape Cod design with mostly white interior, and hardwood floors. His kitchen had an open floor layout flowing into the dining and living area in the central hall via graceful arches. He had also replaced all the appliances with new brushed steel ones.
It was apparent that the best granite for his kitchen would be a light colors like white. The bathrooms were done in gray paint and white ceramic tiles with bronze fixtures, and for these we recommended the Bianco Romano or Glacier White, also in stock.
Since the client was anxious to close the books on the renovation. We made our measurements and gave him an initial estimate. The kitchen needed two slabs, while the bathrooms needed about half a slab. It was unfortunate that we did not have suitable remnants. He gave a deposit for the stones and we promised to send the fabricator the next day to make the templates.
Installation
The client already had the kitchen cabinets and new sink installed, but upon inspection, the fabricator determined that additional support was needed to bear the weight of the counters. The vanities were RTA products, and already had accommodation for stone countertops. The work crew worked on the kitchen while the fabricator cut the granite stones. They were ready for installation after two days. It took longer than usual because the kitchen counters were extensive, and require many cutouts. We went straight to installing the stones as the client was not present to approve a dry fit. It took four hours to install, polish, and seal the granite. It would be ready for use the following day.
The client was extremely pleased with the new kitchen countertops, which lent depth and elegance to the room. He was hard put to identify the seams, so precisely did the various pieces fit together, and the silver flecks in the granite echoed the new stainless-steel appliances. The bathroom vanities looked fantastic as well, the granite blending very well with the overall design.
